The short answer
Brownstone parlor floors usually have the tallest ceilings in the house and narrow walls between tall windows, so hang vertically: tall 24x36 panels over the mantel or sofa, and slim pieces on the window piers. Old plaster over brick needs real hardware. The Thalasse Black/Beige sandstone set and the Cuspin vintage botanicals suit the rooms best.

Why we picked it
A modernist still life for a formal brownstone dining room; format is unconfirmed, so verify first.
A brownstone gives you height, not width. Most Brooklyn rowhouses are long and narrow, often somewhere around 16 to 25 feet wide. The parlor floor usually has the tallest ceilings in the house, plus tall windows that leave narrow solid walls between them. Good brownstone wall decor is vertical: tall panels over the mantel, slim pieces on the window piers, and sets hung as a column rather than a long row. Build the room around that and the original architecture does the rest.
We don’t sell locally. There is no Brooklyn shop or showroom behind this guide. Every piece we recommend links to Amazon and is delivered by Amazon. What we add is the measuring and the matching.
A typical brownstone has a garden level partly below the street, a parlor floor reached by the stoop, and two or three smaller upper floors. Front rooms face the street and rear rooms face the garden. In deep houses, the room in the middle may have no windows of its own.
Each level hangs differently:
The long side walls of a rowhouse are usually brick party walls covered in plaster. That matters for hardware, which we cover below.
Go taller than you think. Use the furniture or mantel below for the width (60 to 80 percent of it) and the ceiling for the height. Three 24x36 panels hung side by side span about 76 inches. In a parlor room with 11-foot ceilings, they finally have the height to look right.
| Brownstone wall | Typical clear width | Recommended art | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Over the mantel | 48–60 in. mantel | 30–48 in. wide, tall format | Bottom edge 8–10 in. above the shelf |
| Pier between parlor windows | 20–36 in. | One vertical 24x36, or a diptych stacked vertically | Keep 6+ in. clear of window trim |
| Parlor side wall over a sofa | 84–96 in. sofa | 58–76 in. span | Three 24x36 panels; center can rise to 60–62 in. |
| Garden-level bed wall | 60–80 in. headboard | 40–64 in. span | Three 20x30 panels (about 64 in.) or a pair |
| Upper-floor bedroom | 54–60 in. headboard | 36–48 in. span | One 24x36 horizontal, or two smaller panels |
Spans assume each listed size is per panel with 2 to 3 inch gaps. Confirm dimensions on the Amazon listing before you plan around them. In standard rooms, the center of the art sits at 57 inches. Parlor floors with very tall ceilings can go to about 60 to 62 inches. Keep the bottom edge 8 to 10 inches above a sofa back or mantel if that is higher.
Find out what is behind the wall first. Interior partitions are often plaster over wood lath, and angled picture hooks or screws with anchors hold well in them. The long party walls are often plaster applied straight onto brick, so you need a masonry bit and a plug or sleeve anchor.
Tap the wall. A hollow sound with occasional solid spots means lath. A dull, completely solid sound means masonry behind the plaster. Put painter’s tape over the spot before drilling so old plaster doesn’t flake at the edges. On exposed brick, drill the mortar joint rather than the brick face. It goes in more easily and patches more invisibly. Our plaster-wall guide goes through the hardware for each surface.
A few brownstones still have picture rail molding near the ceiling. If yours does, hang from the rail with hooks and cords or wire and skip drilling entirely. That works well for the relief sets, as long as the hooks and cord are rated well above the piece’s weight.
Light comes from the two ends only. Front and rear rooms get daylight. Middle rooms often get little or none. Low, raking light in the front and back rooms brings out relief. The dark middle needs contrast and a lamp.
A rowhouse has windows only at the street and garden ends, so which way it faces decides a lot. If the street side faces south, the parlor gets strong sun, and prints opposite the windows will slowly fade. Hang them on side walls instead. A north-facing front gets even, cool light all day, and texture reads better than delicate color there. The Thalasse Black/Beige Sandstone set looks its best in this light. Late daylight comes in low across the room, and the sandblasted blocks pick up shadow like real stone. For the windowless middle room or a garden-level apartment, see our guide to art for dark rooms.
Let the moldings and mantel set the period, then choose one of two directions. Echo them with vintage naturalist prints, or contrast them with quiet modern relief. Either works. A mix of loud prints in the same room fights the plasterwork.
The Cuspin Vintage Botanical set is the echo. Three plate-style botanicals at 20x30 each read as a 19th-century naturalist’s study, and the set spans about 64 inches. That suits a garden-level banquette or a queen bed wall. Over a mantel, it only works if the mantel and its wall run unusually wide. The Cuspin Vintage Blue Heron pair is two 24x36 prints. Stacked vertically, they fill a parlor window pier. Side by side, they fit over a queen bed upstairs.
The contrast route is relief. The Thalasse Mid-Century Relief in cream and brown suits a floor-through rental with standard ceilings, where 36-inch panels would crowd. For a formal dining room, the Laurent Marcel Salinas Nature Morte is a modernist still life. Its format and edition aren’t confirmed in our data, and it has no buyer reviews yet, so verify size and material on Amazon before buying. More period-appropriate options are in our vintage botanical picks.
Carry boxes up the stoop rather than through the garden door if the garden hall is narrow. Measure the turns of the interior stair, which in many rowhouses is steep and tight at the landings. Three-panel sets arrive as separate panels, and that helps a lot here.
Upper-floor apartments in converted brownstones are walk-ups, so a large piece goes up by hand. Take panels out of the box at the bottom only if the box won’t make the turn, and protect the corners. Our walk-up moving guide has the turning technique.
Many brownstone apartments are rentals in owner-occupied houses, so the person whose plaster you’re drilling may live downstairs. Read your lease, and ask before you drill into brick or old plaster. Many leases require consent for alterations, and the terms in yours are what count.
Picture rails, leaning art on the mantel shelf and a single well-placed hook usually raise fewer questions than a row of anchors. Check the current price on Amazon for each pick before you plan a whole wall.

Leave about 8 to 10 inches between the mantel shelf and the bottom of the frame, then check that the center isn't far above eye level. In a parlor room with a very tall ceiling, a center around 60 to 62 inches is fine, and a tall vertical piece fills the space over the mantel better than a wide one.
Yes, with a masonry bit and sleeve or plug anchors. Drill into the mortar joint rather than the brick face, because mortar is easier to patch. If you rent, ask your landlord first, since a hole in old brick can't be hidden the way a nail hole in plaster can.
Rooms between the front and rear windows often get little daylight. Choose high-contrast or green-toned pieces with texture, and light them with a lamp or a picture light rather than relying on daylight.
