Why we picked it
One 24x36 canvas that holds a postwar living-room wall on its own and stays calm in a room that also has to be an office.

The short answer
For most Manhattan living rooms, a single 24x36 piece or a three-panel set spanning roughly 52 to 76 inches does the job. Size to the furniture, not the wall: two-thirds of a 72-to-84-inch sofa. Prewar plaster wants proper hooks, glass towers leave one solid wall, and the Cuspin Boho Black & White canvas is our easiest first piece.

The Main Concourse after dark: the Manhattan piece for the one wall a glass tower leaves you.
Most Manhattan apartments have one wall that does the heavy lifting, usually the long wall behind the sofa. Most also have a set of awkward short walls between windows, doors, closets and radiators. Get the main wall right with one large piece or a three-panel set sized to the furniture. Then give each short wall a smaller piece or leave it bare. The building you live in decides more than your taste does: ceiling height, wall material, how light comes in, and whether a 40-inch box can get up the stairs.
One note before the measuring. We don’t sell anything locally, in Manhattan or anywhere else. Every piece on this page links to Amazon, and Amazon delivers it. Our job is choosing what fits and telling you how to hang it.
Choosing wall art for Manhattan apartments starts here. Answer this first, because it sets your ceiling height, your wall surface and how many usable walls you have. Manhattan housing falls roughly into four groups, and each one hangs differently.
Size the art to the furniture under it, not to the wall. Aim for 60 to 80 percent of the sofa or console width. Treat the wall width as a limit and keep at least 6 to 12 inches of clear wall from any corner, window trim or door casing.
| Furniture or wall | Typical width | Recommended art span | What fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loveseat or apartment sofa | 60–72 in. | 40–56 in. | One 24x36, or three 16x24 frames (about 52 in. with gaps) |
| Full-size sofa | 84 in. | 52–66 in. | Three 20x30 panels (about 64 in.) or three 16x24 frames |
| Long postwar sofa or sectional side | 90–96 in. | 58–76 in. | Three 24x36 panels (about 76 in. with 2 in. gaps) |
| Pier between two windows | 24–40 in. clear | 16–28 in. | One 24x24 square or a single vertical canvas |
| Short wall beside an entry door | 30–48 in. | 20–34 in. | One 24x24 or one 24x36 hung vertically |
Spans for sets assume each listed size is per panel. Confirm panel dimensions on the Amazon listing before you commit to a layout. For centering height, use the gallery standard of 57 inches from the floor. Over a sofa, keep the bottom edge 8 to 10 inches above the sofa back if that puts it higher. In a prewar room with a 10-foot ceiling, raising the center to about 60 to 62 inches looks right. Our 57-inch rule guide has the full math.
Use picture hooks driven in at an angle, or screws into pre-drilled holes with proper anchors. Don’t just hammer a nail straight in. Old plaster cracks and crumbles around a straight nail, and plaster over block can stop a nail dead.
Prewar plaster comes in two main kinds. Plaster over wood lath sounds hollow between the lath strips, and an angled hook holds well in it. Plaster over masonry, such as clay tile or gypsum block, sounds solid and dull, and it usually needs a masonry bit and a proper anchor. Postwar buildings often have plaster over block too. Tap the wall before you buy hardware. Put painter’s tape over the mark before drilling so the edges don’t chip. Our plaster-wall guide covers each surface step by step.
In glass towers, interior partitions are typically drywall over metal studs. Light canvases are fine on rated drywall anchors. Heavier relief and 3D wood sets deserve a stud or a heavy-duty toggle. Never drill into a concrete column or slab without checking with your building first, since it may carry conduit.
Most Manhattan apartments get less direct sun than the floor plan suggests. Side-street units, low floors and rooms facing an air shaft get flat, indirect light, so texture and contrast matter more than delicate color.
North-facing rooms and air-shaft rooms get even, cool light all day. Subtle beige-on-beige prints can wash out there. Relief panels like the Thalasse Wabi Sabi Sandstone Panels still show their surface, because the forms make their own shadows. High-floor rooms facing south or west with big windows have the opposite problem. Strong sun fades prints over time and puts glare on anything behind glass. Hang on the walls that face the windows, not beside them, and keep photographs out of direct afternoon sun. Avenue-facing apartments also tend to be brighter and noisier. A calm piece helps there, and the Cuspin Boho Black & White canvas has the contrast to hold up in strong daylight. For dim rooms, see our guide to art for dark rooms.
Steam radiators usually sit under windows in prewar and postwar buildings, so the wall below a window is rarely usable. Keep art well clear of radiator heat, and don’t hang it directly above a radiator.
Heat and the dry air of a steam-heated winter are hard on canvas and wood. The usable walls are the ones without windows: the sofa wall, the bed wall and the narrow piers between windows. A pier is often only 24 to 40 inches wide. That is where a 24-inch square like the Cuspin 3D Textured Wood Minimalist earns its place. Through-wall air conditioners and window units also take wall space. Measure around them, not through them.
Measure the route before you order anything big: building entrance, stair turns, elevator cab and your own door. Three-panel sets ship in boxes that are easier to carry than one large canvas. A 36-inch-tall panel is still awkward on a tight tenement stair.
In walk-ups, the tightest point is usually the turn between flights, not the door. Elevator buildings have their own limits. Small cabs, service-elevator scheduling and delivery-hour rules all affect whether a box reaches you the day it arrives. Ask your super how deliveries work before you order. Our walk-up moving guide covers carrying and turning large pieces. Because everything we recommend ships from Amazon, also check the listed package dimensions against your narrowest turn.
Read your lease and your building’s rules before you put a single hole in the wall. Many leases require the landlord’s consent for alterations, and some buildings say how walls may be patched when you move out. A few small hook holes are usually easier to fix than anchor holes in plaster, but the terms that apply to you are in your own lease.
If drilling is off the table, lean art on a console or a deep sill instead. Our renter-friendly NYC guide covers the options that leave the least trace.
Start with the building, then the wall.

Measure the sofa or console under the wall and aim for art that spans about two-thirds of it. Over a 72-inch sofa that is roughly 48 to 58 inches, which a single 24x36 piece hung with breathing room or a set of three 16x24 frames covers neatly.
Interior walls in newer towers are often drywall over metal studs, so use anchors rated well above the piece's weight or find a stud. Some perimeter walls and columns are concrete and need a masonry bit. Check your building's rules before drilling into any concrete.
Many doorman and elevator buildings set delivery hours, ask that large items come up in a service elevator, or require advance notice. Ask your super or management office before a large box arrives so it is not refused at the door.
